Abstract

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly common on roads worldwide. However, consumer hesitation persists, often centered on concerns about driving range, charging duration, and battery safety. These issues are fundamentally linked to the battery technology currently in use. Most EVs rely on lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes. An emerging alternative—solid-state batteries—replaces the liquid with a solid material. This paper provides an accessible yet technically grounded examination of solid-state battery technology, comparing it with conventional systems, evaluating its claimed advantages, and identifying the remaining obstacles to commercialization. The central argument is that while solid-state batteries hold genuine potential to transform the EV market, significant technical and manufacturing challenges mean that widespread adoption remains several years away.
